A summer research internship in Computational Chemistry is available in the Analytical Operations at the Foster City, CA, campus of Gilead Sciences. The candidate should be enrolled in an Undergraduate or Graduate Program with a major in Chemistry or related field. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to apply his/her computational chemistry expertise to a project of relevance for pharmaceutical and biotech companies and to work collaboratively with the scientists at Gilead to advance the establishment of a computational chemistry capabilities.
Essential Functions:
Under general supervision, conduct research in the areas including but not limited to:
Computational chemistry calculation for accurate prediction of structural and physicochemical properties of drugs and related molecules
Optimization of computational chemistry methodologies for improved accuracy and efficiency
Application of computational chemistry to problems in small molecule drug development
Write reports and present work through presentations and/or poster sessions to internal/external audience
Knowledge, Experience & Skills:
Good knowledge of basic principles in physical organic chemistry and computational chemistry
Proficiency in ab initio or density functional method calculations and modeling vibrational and optical spectra with computational chemistry software such as Gaussian and Gamess
Good verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills
Must be at least 18 years old
Must have a minimum GPA of 2.8
Must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor’s/Masters/PhD program at an accredited US based university or college
Must be Rising Junior or Senior in undergrad or a Graduate or Doctoral Student
Must be enrolled in the Fall Semester at an accredited university/college after the completion of the internship
Must be able to complete a 10-12 consecutive week internship between June and September
Must be able to work remotely or relocate if necessary and work at the designated site for the duration of the internship
Must show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination* prior to start of internship
